Kobe Studio Seminar for Studies with Renderman

Workshop: A discussion of modeling by hand, procedural modeling and RenderMan's RIS

This is a workshop of KSS Projects for Communication: Invariant Theory, and techniques of visual effects, and we would like to have a deep discussion on the topic hence attendance is limited to only the related colleagues who have been contacted with us in advance. If you are a specialist in this topic and interested in our workshop, please contact to the corresponding organizer: Kosaku Nagasaka in advance.

This project has just started with some points of our observations within shaders written by RSL(RenderMan Shading Language), which were found at the previous discussions (e.g. workshop and seminar). In this workshop, we would like to have further discussions to enrich the observations. Especially, modeling by hand, procedural modeling (with Mathematica v7, Houdini, Maya in this workshop) and their collaborative modeling are our interests. Additionally, to study again the procedures before visual effects, we would like to have a discussion on techniques of architectural visualization and texturing, and a tutorial discussion on possibilities of techniques by RenderMan's RIS (maybe available after the date).

Moreover, we will also have elementary and preliminary discussions. For example, how to apply "effects" theoretically, how to represent effects in practice theoretically, and the possibility of finding mathematical structures in the relationships between Invariant Theory and various techniques of visual effects. In those discussions, we would like to take care of cases that some strong "effects" may restrict scripting and subjects, and discuss how to rethink and expand artistic techniques of visual effects in the context of Invariant Theory.

We will have further discussions on the ideas found in this workshop at another workshop on 6th Sep. As for modeling by hand and drawing by hand, we will have further discussions at another workshop on 25th Oct.

Program

Time:
10:00-11:00
Title:
An approach of modeling by hand, with sensors
Speaker:
Yusuke Kiriu (Studio Phones)
Abstract:

With a brief introduction to practical modeling techniques and existing methodologies of 3DCG with sensors, and my observation from the view point of recent discussion, we will discuss the possibilities of sensor-based modeling techniques, for later discussion.

Time:
11:10-12:10
Title:
An approach of procedural modeling method, for better mesh
Speaker:
Yusuke Kiriu (Studio Phones)
Abstract:

We currently adapt procedural modeling method to provide various kind of better mesh for architectural study, guide mesh for simulation purpose, and base mesh for modeling by hand. In this talk, I will try to explain these details from the view point of recent discussion.

Time:
13:40-14:40
Title:
CG and Invariant Theory from a viewpoint of Symbolic and Algebraic Computations
Speaker:
Kosaku Nagasaka (Kobe University)
Abstract:

Symbolic and Algebraic Computations is an interdisciplinary subject to study algorithms and softwares for manipulating mathematical objects. In this talk, we will give a brief introduction for this subject with its history and its relationship with Invariant Theory. Additionally, we will talk about some important things to discuss with people from different subjects (Symbolic and Algebraic Computations, Invariant Theory and CG) as a researcher in the interdisciplinary subject and working for a sort of interdisciplinary faculty.

Time:
15:00-16:00
Title:
Material Science from the view point of Invariant Theory
Speaker:
Ryuji Tanimoto (Shizuoka University)
Abstract:

For fuel tanks of airplanes, one frequently use textile reinforced composites to achieve high durability at lower cost. It is an important problem to find the failure conditions for such materials. The failure conditions should be chosen as invarinats under the symmetry of the materials. In this talk, we firstly recall stress tensor, and compute invariants related to the failure conditions for unidirectional reinforced composites. In this computation, we use Computational Invariant Theory due to Derksen. This talk is based upon Section 5.9 of the book "Computational Invariant Theory" written by H. Derksen and G. Kemper.

Time:
16:20-17:20
Title:
A discussion on techniques of visual effects from the view point of Invariant Theory
Speaker:
Ryuji Tanimoto (Shizuoka University)
Abstract:

We discuss the possibility of finding visual effects from the previous talk. Especially, we discuss whether we can create computer graphics drawing the motion that unidirectional reinforced composites break under stress. We also discuss a topic of Invaiant Theory, related to the symmetry of materials.

Time:
17:30-
Discussion:
Moderator:
Ryuji Tanimoto (Shizuoka University)
Abstract:

Based on the all talks in this workshop, we discuss visual effects from the theoretical and practical points of view, have a discussion to enrich our knowledge of shaders written by RenderMan Shading Language, and discuss finding the possibility of mathematical structures from visual effects. In this discussion, we would like to aware of the relationships among techniques of CG (modeling, visualization, texturing), Symbolic and Algebraic Computations, and Invariant Theory.
